The Steps to Start A Non-Profit
Here are the steps to starting a non-profit organization. It can be a complex process, but the following are the basic steps you can follow:
Define your mission: Clearly articulate the purpose of your non-profit and what problem it will aim to solve.
Research the need: Ensure that there is a need for the services you plan to offer and that another organization is not already providing them.
Form a team: Find individuals who share your vision and are willing to work with you to establish the non-profit.
Write a business plan: Outline your organization's goals, strategies, and budget.
Incorporate the organization: Choose a legal structure for your non-profit and register it with the state.
Apply for tax-exempt status: Submit an application for tax-exempt status with the IRS to allow your non-profit to operate without paying federal income tax.
Establish a board of directors: Recruit individuals to serve on the board of directors and set their responsibilities.
Fundraise: Develop a fundraising plan and raise money to support your non-profit's operations and programs.
Launch your non-profit: Start offering the services and programs you have planned, and continually evaluate and adjust your operations to ensure their success.
Note: The specific requirements for starting a non-profit vary by country and jurisdiction.
I started a charity in 2022, not knowing it was my year to give back in one of the most meaningful way. GOD told me about starting a mentoring program back in 2020. I didn’t know how or when, but I knew for certain it would happen.
In 2021, GOD literally gave me the visions and had me write out the mission statement, core values, and program when I was on a plane traveling to Barbados. Side note: Travel is a necessary experience, but we will dive into the whys another time.
2022 was the year GOD had me pivoting and executing in ways I did not imagine. When I launched my charity in 2022, I literally had no idea I would have 8 mentees to start with. Seven of them I had not engaged with before.
In the picture above, you see 5 of my mentees whom I took on a catamaran lunch for half a day to swim with the turtles and experience beautiful views of Barbados. It was our very first team-building event. Team-building for youths on a boat!!! I know…it’s a pretty big deal.
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, I was asked how I started a non-profit and podcast.
Before you get started on setting up your charity, non-profit, or next business idea, listen to this podcast.
Ep 3: What Are The Steps
GOD put us on Earth to serve, but you must be sure that whatever for-profit or non-profit you launch is aligned to the purpose that GOD wants you to serve. If you need clarity to guide you to what GOD has for you, book a clarity call.
P.S. My mentoring program is going global. Soon we will be expanding in more countries. Stay tuned.
Currently, we are accepting applications in Barbados. If you know someone with children between 16-23 years of age, please send them to
If you know youth in the Caribbean or Africa, please reach out to terry@thewealthsharer.com.
